NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — Two Charleston County sheriff’s deputies and a motorcyclist were taken to the hospital early Saturday morning after a driver slammed into the back of a patrol car during a traffic stop on Interstate 26, then took off on foot.
The crash happened around 2 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22, 2026, on I-26 near the Remount Road exit in North Charleston. All three people who were hurt have since been released from the hospital. No one has been arrested.
What Happened
A Charleston County deputy had pulled over a motorcyclist on I-26 and was standing outside the patrol vehicle conducting the stop when another vehicle struck the rear of the patrol unit, according to the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.
Three people were injured:
- The deputy who was standing outside the patrol car conducting the stop
- A second deputy who was seated inside the patrol vehicle
- The motorcyclist who had been pulled over
All three were transported to a nearby hospital and treated for injuries described by the sheriff’s office as minor. Each has been released.
The driver of the striking vehicle and a passenger both got out and ran from the scene toward Remount Road. Investigators have not released descriptions of the suspects or the vehicle involved.
